A catheter is used for draining urine at all times. It can be left in for short or long durations. Sometimes it is left in post-operatively for bladder rest, sometimes it is placed for urinary retention, or for a variety of reasons. Most catheters are made of natural latex, but for those allergic, silicone catheters are used.
Most standard catheters have a main drainage spout and a balloon port. The balloon is usually inflated with 10-30ml of water that inflates the balloon at the tip of the catheter that prevents the catheter from slipping out. The balloon port varies in color depending on the size of the catheter. Standard catheters are known as “two-way” catheters. A “three-way” catheter is typically a larger caliber catheter with a third inflow port used to wash the bladder of blood if present or sometimes after surgery.
A leg bag is a smaller bag that drains urine, and can be strapped to the leg and worn under clothes. It typically holds 500ml of urine or less. The bedside bag is much larger with a longer tube that can be used at night, and has greater capacities of 1000 ml or more.
Simply washing of the catheter with soap and water is fine. Showering is OK. Baths should be avoided. Do not wash it down with rubbing alcohol or Vaseline. KY jelly or other water-based jellies can be applied at the point where the catheter enters the penis to help lubricate this area that can get irritated. It is normal to see some mild yellowish discharge at the site where the catheter exits the penis. This is the body’s normal reaction to a foreign element being present. Good hygiene will lead to odor control.
At the bottom of the collection bag is a either a spigot or a clip. Stand over the toilet and carefully aim the spigot or clip into the toilet prior to empying.
Whether male or female, sex should be avoided if a catheter is in place.
In order to remove the catheter (on the direction of the physician), simply use a kitchen scissor to cut off the colored knob. This will release the balloon water which will squirt out. Only AFTER all the water is done squirting is it OK to pull out the catheter. It does not need to be jerked out, but a simple pulling motion is most comfortable. Often, patients can remove it in the shower in case urine or blood will follow catheter removal.
